From the Valley of My Youth
by J. Bayer

I stood atop a hill
And looked upon
My youth.

There before me
Like yesterday
The years unfolded.

My parents’
Incessant fights.

Imposed dreams
That weren’t mine.

So many limitations
Based on their mistakes.

There it was again
And it took my breath away.

A girl’s memories
A woman’s reality.

Overgrown
Roof collapsed
Fences tumbled down.

I wept
Not from bitterness
But because I’d forgotten.

There were good times too.
