But Not for Them
By J. Bayer

Unborn promise lurking near,
Appears on Christmas tide.
Holidays for family cheer,
A season when they hide.

Cold hearts know an empty tale,
Of rice and bouquets tossed,
Dreams of silky wedding veils,
And war-time husbands lost.

A bitter wind for lonely hags,
Who shuffle through the snow.
They carry empty shopping bags,
For a family no one knows.
